Hatch Sans - the east coast companion to the west coast slab.
The first typeface release of 2024 for PSTL designed by Mark Caneso
You may have seen Hatch on screen. It is being used as the main title for the popular Paramount Network show Yellowstone.
Designed in 2015, Hatch remains a fresh take on the horizontal stress slab serif.
I revisited the design in 2020 looking for ways to expand the design.
I thought about additional weights & widths but ultimately felt that creating a sans version was the way to add versatility to the family.
Getting Started
As I began the process for creating the Sans version, I wanted to make sure I wasn't simply doing a chop job on the original. Yes, the serifs would need to be removed but by doing so I wanted to ensure that I was looking at the design with fresh eyes, looking for ways to improve the drawing and overall quality.
The new font offered an opportunity to revisit some design decisions, redistribute the weight spectrum to increase the range from 4 to 6 weights, as well as expand the character set to meet the requirements of today's designers.
Fast forward to 2024 and Hatch Sans is now a fully complete design in 6 weights from Thin to Bold with matching italics as well as a Variable option for each. The character set covers over 200 Latin based languages including Vietnamese and is available only at pstypelab.com
Alternates
Hatch Sans contains a few alternate stylistic sets. The default a, k & t are unique designs to the Sans, while the alternates for those forms relate closely to the original slab family. The alternate for the g explored a double-story form and schoolbook y is ready to swap in at anytime. The alternates can easily be accessed via the OpenType palettes.

Italics
The Hatch Italics carry a distinct personality. Ensuring this quality transferred to the
sans-serif was crucial. While toned-down, gestures remain, particularly in the diagonals, and the overall design achieves a harmonious balance with the upright version.
Shelf Life
As I create any typeface I always envision where it can be used and how it may function.
I think there will be many opportunities for companies &d agencies to put Hatch Sans to work in packaging and branding. The design offers a ton of special moments that can make products or brands stand out from the competition.
Hatch Sans is now available in 6 weights with matching italics or as a variable font.
